Why Would People use Pheromones?

Pheromones

Well, I think the big thing is you celebrity endorsement from a big name in human pheromone work, Professor McClintock. The next thing that happened very quickly is you could buy these pheromones by mail order. So if you’re a psychologist somewhere in the midwest, you could buy these by mail and you didn’t need the pesky chemists to work with which you need if you’re going to do serious chemical work.

This is because working on mammal pheromones is really hard. But this way you could just send off your money and you get it in the mail. Everyone really believed these really where human pheromones. So you do your research, you send out your paper and it would reach believers who would say, well, you know, it looks pretty good to me, publish it. Learn more at http://astrobiosociety.org

Is The Pheromone Research Legit?

So there’s lots of pheromones research published and I think nobody, even if they were citing it, was going back to that 1991 ground zero paper and actually seeing it had no methods. Now, if the pheromone molecules have no effect, how come so many people reported in the literature that they’ve found exciting results? There are probably two reasons.

The first is false positives. If you have small sample sizes of college students bribed with vouchers, you can very easily by chance discover significant results. Now, that wouldn’t matter if it wasn’t combined with positive publication bias. Basically, it means whenever you get a positive result, you will excite the editor and be published in a journal. If you don’t get a positive result, you say perhaps something was something wrong with the experiment. So basically if you look at the literature you’ll see a lot of positive results because every negative experiment never meets the light of day.

Where Are They Located?

So one of the things I’ve been asking is which areas should we look for pheromones? Now, traditionally people have looked in armpits. Well, there’s a good reason. Chimpanzees and humans all have lots of smelly areas in their armpits. I think the real reason is it’s the least embarrassing place to ask somebody you’ve not met before for a pheromone sample. Now having gotten your sample, what you need to do is separate the molecules according to http://sundowndivers.org/

How do you identify Pheromones?

One of the things which have worked very well in mice is you compare the chemical profiles. So you look at what’s different between males and females. Or you could look at many of these pheromones which are dependent on having enough testosterone. For example, A castrated male is both unhappy and it also doesn’t produce pheromones according to

Finding Human Pheromones

So we’re on the way to finding human pheromones. But actually, there are quite a lot of problems along the way as you will have anticipated agree. The first of these is cultural since so many of our responses to smell are driven by culture. And this is a real problem. In western culture, we spend billions of dollars taking off smells and about the same amount of money putting the smells back on with perfumes. And basically, our reactions are completely dominated by our culture and upbringing. The problem in studying human pheromones is we actually know very little about human sexual behavior in private. And one of the problems is it’s very difficult to do it in the lab because people get shy. And it could be that it’s in the final stages of oral sex that pheromones actually have an effect.
